Are you wondering if you need to be talking during your massage session? Do you feel you need to say something to your therapist to fill in the silence?
Thai Yoga Massage is a meditative practice that does not usually invite chatting. We don’t want to stay too much in the head, in our usual monkey brain jumping from one distraction to another. The time spent receiving Thai Yoga Massage is most valuable when we remain silent and just being and feeling which also allows the parasympathetic nervous system to take over and accelerate the healing process.
Still during the session I am very much interested to know how you are feeling. Every person and every massage is unique and I am here to meet your specific needs. So here are three major things that I would like to know during the massage.
Is the pressure right for you?
Do you need more or less? Is it so strong that you even feel unpleasant pain and can’t relax? Is it so light that you don’t really feel anything? Or is it almost right but just a bit…? What I have learned from giving massages is that the same pressure is never going to work for all parts of our bodies. Sometimes our left calf muscle will be more tender than the right one or the outer thigh will be tighter. We are uneven and sometimes surprising differences come up in the massage. So tell me when you feel you need more or less pressure.
Does any movement feels uncomfortable or painful?
Now, there are different types of pain. There is the sudden, sharp one and it is the one that we want to avoid in all circumstances. Thai Yoga Massage is a gentle, slow practice that can go deep but every move and every pressure applied is gradual, mindful and focused. So sharp pain is not on the menu. And there is the sweet pain that is on the verge of actual pleasure which we feel like release, like untying of the knots. I am certain you will know the difference and I definitely want to know about it.
Are you getting cold?
Surprising as it may be, you may be cold during a massage even on a relatively warm day. We are shifting energy in Thai massage and you are lying down for a longer period so I always have blankets handy.
Apart from these three, everything that makes you uncomfortable or distracts you from the work being done is worth talking about during your massage session. You don’t like the music, you need to go to the toilet or to drink water, the position you’ve been for awhile is getting uncomfortable, the incense is not working for you today, anything really. Let me know, I am here for your comfort.
