In the years I have been practicing Thai massage I have met all kinds of beliefs about it. One of them is that in Thai massage treatment you will always get somebody walk on your back. That your body will inevitably be thrown around, stretched to the limit and ultimately harshly treated. So in this blogpost I would like to focus on the question: Is Thai massage painful?
Intense, but not painful
Thai massage can sometimes feel intense. In my treatments I use my hands, elbows, knees, and even feet to massage the body. This can cause sensations of stretching and pressure or even some mild pain, especially in areas with existing tightness.
However, I will always check in with you and adjust the pressure accordingly. I believe that, unbearable pain that makes you writhe and want to move away is counterproductive and increases the tension in the body. There’s a common misconception that a more painful massage is necessarily a more effective one. I will always prioritise your comfort and tailor the pressure to your specific needs.
That being said, some mild pain and discomfort during the treatment are possible but I am always aiming to stay on the verge of these sensations. My clients call them good pain because they feel like a release and go away quickly.
Overall, Thai massage can be an invigorating and deeply relaxing experience. While some discomfort is possible, it’s generally not meant to be painful. By communicating with me and working together, we can make Thai massage a completely enjoyable experience.
