I saw a great TED talk and it’s about death. I am posting it below, watch it! It is truly amazing and also funny. It has stayed with me for several days now, I am still thinking about it. Alua Arthur, who is a death doula, puts death into perspective that I believe is close to the yogic understanding of the concept.
We don’t usually want to talk or even think about death too much. The word itself often evokes fear, sadness, and a profound apprehension of what lies ahead. In yoga though, we are taught to recognise the impermanence of everything, including our own bodies. Yoga, especially when understood in its broader philosophical context, can be a powerful preparation for facing death and the end of life.
Death, from a yogic perspective, is not something to be feared. It is rather an integral part of life. It is a reminder to live fully. To appreciate the preciousness of each moment, and to connect with our bigger Self, which is eternal and unchanging. By embracing this perspective, we can find peace in the face of death and live a life that is truly meaningful.
Alua Arthur speaks of these same things. Eat the cake, she says. Live now, stay connected to your sensations and experiences. Don’t run around achieving stuff, non of it matters and doesn’t define you at your death bed. And watch for the big glittery river that you are part of.
