So here is the question: Can yoga help in our everyday life?
Do you know that having strong legs means developing back pain is much less likely?
Do you know that the muscles of your legs affect your pelvis and your spine and the ripples go as far as your shoulders and your head?
I am sure you know that muscles can be tight or weak. But do you know that they can be tight and weak at the same time?
A definition of a healthy muscle
We can say that a muscle is healthy when it is strong enough to do its job, for example to move us through space, to stabilise a joint, etc. But at the same time it shouldn’t be tight and rigid, it should be flexible enough the allow our body parts to move to their natural range of motion.
The gift of yoga practice
One of the greatest gifts of yoga in terms of musculoskeletal health is that the practice of good alignment in yoga poses is going to reflect in our activities of daily living.
New yoga course focusing on the legs
In my new yoga course Stand strong with yoga we will focus on building strength and flexibility in the legs.
We will work on the only muscle in our bodies that connects our spine and our legs – the psoas muscle and all the other hip flexors. Tightness or weakness (or both) in these muscles will affect our posture, our gait, the stability of our spine and our breathing.
Two other groups will get our attention – the abductors on the outer thigh and the adductors on the inner thigh. Both groups play a role in stabilising the pelvis and are really important for us to keep our balance.
And last but not least working on strengthening the deep hip rotators is going to help with stabilising the hip, the knee, and the foot. This can improve how we go up and down stairs, how we stand up and sit down into and out of a chair, and also with riding a bicycle.
So if you feel that yoga can help you in everyday life, you can join me on Monday at 12 pm.
