When we think of breast health, most of us immediately think of breast cancer. And there is a good reason for it. Breast cancer is the main cause of death in women aged 35-49 years and 1 in 7 women will develop the disease in their lifetime.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Around 55,900 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year (according to Cancer Research UK). This translates to over 150 new diagnoses every day. Furthermore, around 11,500 women die from breast cancer in the UK each year. This represents nearly 1,000 deaths each month, 31 each day, or one every 45 minutes!

So, the logical question is, what can we do about our breast health apart from regular screening?

Yoga and breast health

Yoga offers a proactive approach to breast health. By focusing on the supportive tissues of the breasts, yoga can promote a healthy internal environment.

Improved Circulation and Drainage: Stagnant fluids and tissues can be detrimental. Lymph fluid, which carries away waste, can build up when not circulating properly. This stagnation may contribute to cellular stress and inflammation. Yoga poses, with their gentle compressions and stretches, stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging waste removal and promoting healthy circulation. Fresh oxygen and nutrients are then delivered to breast tissue, vital for optimal cell function.

Beyond Movement: Yoga offers additional benefits. Increasing awareness allows you to tune into your body. Deep breathing techniques promote relaxation and stress reduction, which may also improve breast health. Additionally, better posture and toned muscles can benefit breast health.

Accessible and Adaptable: Yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities. Modifications can be made to ensure a safe and effective practice for everyone.

Yoga empowers you to take an active role in your breast health journey. With a consistent practice, you can navigate this path with strength and confidence.
